‘Blackberry and Apple-pie Days’ (Anon)
The children play as
The bonfire crackles
And snaps
In the sunpatch.
Scorching thistles
Lean
Back
Spitting
And hissing, betwixt
Clenched
Teeth.
Their shelter in the thick smoke base
A primitive cover. Gooseberries
One side burnished,
To burnt Sienna
Sizzling
And
Shrivelling
With drawn, raw heat.
Other side
Reversed
The scrubbed clean faces
Of unripe fruits
Screened
By the cool green orchard,
Twirl
And
Bob,
In the leaf-curled
Woodsmoke.
