‘BALBOA’ Billboard – Rocky
‘BALBOA’ was my first piece where I work with smoke detail to create a silhouetted character and I am so pleased by the results. Rather than the static and stark silhouettes that are typical I have strived to inject movement and depth into mine through using the smoke textures. I love how it flows, expanding and contracting to take the shape of the body.
The image of Rocky is so incredibly iconic and exists in so many variants, so I was keen on going at this in a different way. Through using the smoke-like textures to create the body it gives off this wonderful ghost-like quality that is perfect for my ‘Lost In Hollywood’ series where we consider the characters from the film that are left behind once the filming stops and the lights go out.
The USA flag has been depicted within the body through the red, white, and blue and the stars whilst hints of the cityscape form the background. I wanted to do something that was gritty where the smoke represents the downtown Philadelphia element whilst in contrast the stars and lighting signify the bright lights of the arena and the fame that Rocky found.

We know you are well aware of how incredibly popular Mark’s embellished pieces are, well these are on a different scale! With the emphasis on hand painted backboards and canvases rather than glitters and diamond dust, these new pieces truly showcase the amount of time that has gone into each piece, be it the cherished original works or the boutique limited editions. Mark has designed and produced quirky stickers that sit on each piece to further add to the impact and unique qualities as well as transforming all frames with his acclaimed custom spray painted mouldings. The teasers give a great insight but you really do need to see these in person, these are genuinely brilliant!
Colourful Language Editions:
If you follow Mark’s work you will know that he has a bit of a potty mouth! Drawing on his copywriting talents, we are excited to showcase a hilarious twist on what we all know and love by tearing up the original film classifications and turning the air blue! Identified by a unique hologram sticker, certain pieces are available as a ‘Colourful Language’ editions that we are sure that you will love! Everyone has a dark side right?!
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bitch!
The images are raised off from the backboards to give impact as well as the double mounts also being raised up with hidden spacers – the end result is just brilliant and a first for Mark’s work.

The billboards are based on the existing large format with an image size of 32 x 24″, so sit perfectly alongside other pieces from past releases.
