Be it a painting for your home in a particular size, shape or colour way, a portrait of your family or partner or the centre piece for your office, commissioning allows you to choose the subject matter, colours, style and dimensions of a piece.
It is a highly personal process and all of us at Gallery 21 will help to guide you along.
Having managed many commissions for our clients, we regard ourselves as experts in commissioning artwork which is a unique and fun way of purchasing art.
The process allows you to become fully engaged with the design and development of a bespoke piece of artwork. It is possible and simple to commission almost any artist from Gallery 21 to create something specifically to fit your criteria and budget.
Choose a work that has already sold by your favourite artist and request ‘the next in the series of’. Have a family portrait painted for posterity. Commemorate a special occasion with a work of art for the memory. Choose your favourite artist to produce a work in the size and with the subject matter you desire. And add a special note from the chosen artist on the back of the artwork.
THE COMMISSIONING PROCESS
We have an extensive collection of artists working in a diverse range of mediums and styles. Whatever the commission we will consult with you and your chosen artist throughout the process to ensure your intended result is achieved. Depending on the commission, artists will work from life, existing or specially taken photographs. Once all criteria has been agreed, we then produce a two page Commission Agreement which puts down in writing all details, criteria, photographic references, etc.. This agreement is signed by the gallery and the client so everyone is fully confident in what to expect in the finished piece.
1) HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
A commission can usually be carried out within the time frame you set but on average commissions take somewhere around 8-10 weeks to complete. This does differ from artist to artist but will be agreed prior to any commission being agreed. The artist will arrange a schedule and we will keep you informed of how the commission is progressing.
2) HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Commissions through Gallery 21 cost no more than an original piece of artwork by the same artist that you will see hung on the gallery wall. Prices are driven purely by size, medium and level of detail. A 50% deposit is required on signing the commission agreement with the balance payable on receipt of the artwork. We also have an Interest Free Credit scheme which allows you to split the cost over a 10 or 21 month period, so that is available in place of the 50/50 payment structure. Any initial concerns around it being an expensive process or one where you will have little control will be quickly alleviated as commissioning is an affordable process and one we keep you fully engaged with as your artwork is produced.
3) WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE THE FINAL PIECE?
Fear not, this is highly unlikely to happen. We carry out a number of thorough consultations with you and the artist before the commission begins, so there is total communication and thorough understanding of what you want. If you enjoy the artist’s work, it is unlikely they will do anything but true justice to your piece. If the work was significantly different to what you expected or hoped for, invariably the artist would create you another piece in its place.
